YOM KIPPUR / SUKKOT 5760

THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

Readings from the Torah on Yom Kippur

Two scrolls are taken out on Yom Kippur for the reading during the Morning Service. In the first, six men are called up to read (and on a Sabbath - seven), after which maftir is read in the second.

The reading in the Torah is about the solemn service in the Beit Hamikdosh, on the Day of Atonement, conducted by the High Priest himself. This was the only day in the year when the High Priest was permitted to enter the Holy of Holies to offer incense and recite a prayer there in behalf of the entire people.

SUKKOT STORY
The Reward

The good man gave them all the ten Shekels he had. Now he was ashamed to return home empty handed, and so he went to the synagogue. There he found children playing with etrogim, for it was the seventh day of Sukkot and there was no more need for the etrogim. The good man collected a sack full of etrogim and went out to seek his fortune.

SUKKOT
The Festival of Ingathering

Sukkot is the time when the produce of the field, orchard and vineyard is gathered in. The granaries, threshing floors and wine and olive-presses are full to capacity. Weeks and months of toil and sweat put into the soil have finally been amply rewarded. The farmer feels happy and elated. No wonder Sukkot is "the Season of Rejoicing."
